Introduction to Northern Pike Fishing Lures

There are many different quality northern pike fishing lures out there which can be used to chase after and land a monster northern pike. While I have my personal favorites of rapalas and other related crank baits for chase after the aggressive pike, there are many other anglers who choose to use spoons, plastic frogs, spinners, and other similar lures. Opinion doesn't make one piece of fishing tackle better than the other when it comes to chasing down pike, but it just goes to show that there are a wide variety of methods to chase after this voracious freshwater fish. Anyone who love an aggressive sports fish will enjoy going after northern pike.

Choosing the Best Pike Lures

Choosing the best pike fishing lure can be very difficult, since there are so many different types of fishing tackle that can effectively be used to nail the trophy northern pike of an angler's dreams. One thing that most really good lures for pike have in common is that they are action based. Northerns are territorial, they are aggressive, and they are ambush feeders. They want to attack their prey and strike hard...which also means they want a meal that is worth the effort. Something that gets their attention is more likely to get a strike. Think obnoxious! Blinkers, rattlers, rapalas that cut through the water - all of these are great options. Giant magnum rapalas that just slice through the water also tend to do very well.  Add the ones with blinkers and rattles and even the most subdued of pike can be sent into a territorial frenzy.

Where to Buy Cheap Pike Lures

While everyone wants to have the best northern pike fishing lures available, there are some cases where money is an issue because fishing can be a very expensive hobby. And by hobby, many anglers mean obsession :) A single rapala can easily cost $12 new, and certain magnum rapalas cost more. This can make getting a whole box of good pike fishing lures really difficult, but there are some fortunate solutions. There are many deals on wholesale or bulk crankbait and rapala lures from Amazon.com or eBay, and this includes used, but also new ones, as well. Some shops might have discount sales, and going to local garage sales or flea markets can help you find an absolute boon of good fishing lures or other equipment that might be perfect in helping you to chase down and land that trophy monster northern pike that you've been looking for.

Good Pike Fishing Lures, Conclusion

I'll admit: crank baits like rapalas and magnums are my favorite pike fishing lures by far, because I've used them a lot for northern pike fishing in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Canada.  And I've caught a lot of good looking northern pike...and watched a lot of 30+ lb pike jump and snap the line.  While these won't always be the best lures depending on the location, other anglers can use spinners and spoons - I'm sticking with my absolute favorite northern pike fishing lures because I know what I like to see work!

Thanks for the kind words. I've grown up fishing for northern pike since I was a young teenager in Boy Scouts. We spent a couple weeks every summer hitting the Ontario waters, and later on some time in Minnesota and Wisconsin chasing pike, as well. I'm a rapala fan myself, but whatever works!

I, never catch pike on the obvious baits to use except spinnerbaits! I usually catch them on 4 inch grubs in late summer and small sucker minnows (4 inches) and catch 5 plus pounders! I have the most luck on bass baits! I am still confused why non of the obvious works for me!

Great hub! When thinking of lures and pike fishing don’t forget good old fashioned spinnerbaits. They may look a bit odd but they certainly catch the fish. Great in weedy water, becuase they are based around a single hook rather than a trbeble, they rattle and flash like no other pike lure. Try them!
